An Islamic Hamas movement militant died Thursday in a tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah after he received an electric shock, the movement's armed wing said.

Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas armed wing, said in a statement published on its website that Mohamed al-Mahmoom, 20, died after he received an electric shock as he was in a military mission in a tunnel in the town.

The group said the tunnel was dug in a base belonging to the movement's armed wing. Hamas armed wing and other militant groups usually dig tunnels used to military missions.

The Israeli army had repeatedly bombarded such kinds of tunnels, saying that those tunnels are either used as weapons cache, or for hiding in case of ground incursion "or to infiltrate into Israel to carry out hostile attacks."
